Problem

After a certificate is installed into Apache 2, connecting via Firefox browser gives the error:

www.domain.com has sent an incorrect or unexpected message. Error Code: -12263

Cause

This can occur if the firewall is blocking the SSL connection as port 443 is not open

Solution

To check and resolve this issue use the steps below:

1) Connect to the website using the internal IP address, on the server network. This can be done via a browser or openssl:

openssl s_client -connect 12.12.12.12:443 -state -ssl3

This should show the certificate that is currently referenced.

2) Check if the IP address is set up correctly on the Firewall

3) Check if port 443 is set up correctly  on the Firewall

For checking IP and port numbers on the Firewall, please consult your firewall vendor
