Error "[site address] has sent an incorrect or unexpected message. Error Code: -12263"

Solution ID:    SO11357    Updated:    07/27/2016

This document was created to assist with resolving an error with Apache.  If this document can not be used within the environment, RapidSSL recommends contacting an organization that supports Apache.

After a certificate is installed into Apache 2, connecting via Firefox browser gives the error:

[Site URL] has sent an incorrect or unexpected message. Error Code: -12263

This can occur if the firewall is blocking the SSL connection as port 443 is not open

To check and resolve this issue use the steps below:

  1. Connect to the website using the internal IP address, on the server network. This can be done via a browser or openssl:

openssl s_client -connect [site address]:[port] -state -[protocol]

    For example:

    openssl s_clinet -connect -state -tls1_2

This should show the certificate that is currently referenced.
  2. Check if the IP address is set up correctly on the firewall
  3. Check if port 443 is set up correctly on the firewall.  For checking IP and port numbers on the firewall, please consult your firewall vendor.
