Description

This document provides instructions for using the Symantec SSL Assistant on Windows.

PLEASE NOTE: The Symantec SSL Assistant is supported on the following Windows platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with IIS 8.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with IIS 8.5
     

 *Must be running Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 or later.

Using the Symantec SSL Assistant to Generate a CSR on Windows:

Step 1: Download the Symantec SSL Assistant
 

  1. Download Symantec SSL Assistant for Windows
  2. The ZIP file contains the following files:  
    • sslassistant.exe
    • sslassistant.exe.config
    • readme.txt
       

NOTE: It is highly recommended that you download the Symantec SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.

 
Step 2: Install the Symantec SSL Assistant

  1. Move sslassistant.exe, sslassistant.exe.config, and readme.txt files to the server where you will install the certificate.

Step 3: Open the Symantec SSL Assistant
 

  1. Double-click the sslassistant.exe file to launch the SSL Assistant.
  2. You MUST agree to the Symantec SSL Assistant Legal Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.


     
  3. Once you have agreed to the terms, click Continue.
  4. Select the Generate CSR.


     
  5. Enter the information you would like to see on your certificate:
    • Organization Name: Enter the organization’s legal name registering for this certificate.
    • Department: Enter the department that will be using this certificate. Note that this field is OPTIONAL.
    • Country: Select the country where the business is registered from the drop down list.
    • State/Province: Enter the state or province where the business is registered. If your organization is registered in a country that does not have a state/province, you can use the city that the business is registered in. Please DO NOT abbreviate the State or Province name.
    • City: Enter the city where the business is legally registered.
    • Website: Enter the website that will be secured with your certificate. For example, www.example.com.
       
  6. Once all your information is entered and algorithm type, click Continue.


     
  7. Select where you would like to store your CSR file and designate a file name for the CSR. Or copy the CSR to clipboard (such as Notepad).
  8. Click Done.



     
  9. Open the CSR file, copy the text, and paste it into the CSR box on the CSR page within the enrollment flows.
     

 


Using the Symantec SSL Assistant to Install a Certificate on Windows:

 

Step 1: Install the RapidSSL Intermediate Certificate Authority (CA)

           

            In order to ensure that your SSL certificate has a complete chain of trust, you must install the RapidSSL Intermediate Certificate Authority CA prior to using the Symantec SSL Assistant to install a certificate on Microsoft IIS.  

 

            Instructions on how to install the intermediate CA can be found at INFO1765.

 

           

Step 2: Download the Certificate:

 

RapidSSL will send you the SSL certificate via email.
 
Using a plain text editor such as Notepad, paste the content of the certificate.
 
You should then have a text file that looks like.
 
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
[encoded data]
-----END CERTIFICATE-----
 
Make sure you have 5 dashes to either side of the BEGIN CERTIFICATE and END CERTIFICATE and that no white space, extra line breaks or additional characters have been inadvertently added.

  

Step 3: Download the Symantec SSL Assistant
Note: If you have already downloaded and installed the SSL Assistant, please proceed to Step 5
 

  1. Download Symantec SSL Assistant for Windows
  2. The ZIP file contains the following files:  
    • sslassistant.exe
    • sslassistant.exe.config
    • readme.txt

    NOTE: It is highly recommended that you download the Symantec SSL Assistant onto the server you plan to install your certificate on.
     

Step 4: Install the Symantec SSL Assistant

  1. Move sslassistant.exe, sslassistant.exe.config, and readme.txt files to the server where you will install the certificate.

 

Step 5: Open the Symantec SSL Assistant

  1. Double-click the sslassistant.exe file to launch the SSL Assistant.
  2. You MUST agree to the Symantec SSL Assistant Legal Agreement before you will be able to proceed further.


     
  3. Once you have agreed to the terms, click Continue.
  4. Select Install Certificate.


     
  5. Symantec SSL Assistant provides two radio button to install a certificate.
    • Automatically download and install my certificate - This radio button is not available or supported for RapidSSL certificate installation.
    • Install a certificate I already downloaded - Click Browse to locate the certificate you already downloaded on the server and click Continue to install your certificate.


       
  6. Enter the binding information for the SSL certificate:
    • Site: select the site that this certificate will be securing.
    • Port: designate which server port you want your SSL certificate to use. Typically, this is port 443 for certificates.


       
  7. Once you have designated both the site and the port, click Continue.
  8. Click Done.
