Certificate Signing Request (CSR) Generation Instructions for Lotus Domino Server 8.5

This document provides instructions for generating a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for Lotus Domino 8.5. If the document can not be used on the server, RapidSSL recommends contacting IBM.

Note:  As of 1/1/2016 all certificates must be issued as SHA-256 with a 2048-bit key size.  Please confirm that the server can support these standards before requesting a certificate.

Before you request a certificate from a CA, you must create a key ring file to store the certificates. A key ring file is a binary file that is password-protected and stored on the server's hard drive. When you create a server key ring file (.KYR), IBM® Lotus® Domino™ generates an unsigned server certificate and automatically includes several trusted root certificates. The unsigned server certificate is not valid until it is signed by a certifier. Domino also creates a stash file (.STH) using the same name as the key ring file, but with the file extension .STH. Domino uses the stash file to store the key ring file password for unattended access to the server key ring file.

To generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) file on Domino 8.5 server, please follow the steps below:

Step 1. Create a server key ring

  1. In the Domino Administration client, double-click on Server Certificate Administration.

  2. Click Create Key Ring.
  3. When promoted, enter a key ring file name: The default is KEYFILE.KYR. It's helpful to use the extension .KYR to keep key ring file names consistent.
  4. Enter a password for your key ring
  5. Specify the key size. The current standard is 2048 bits, 4096 bits can also be used.
  6. Your Distinguished Name information should be entered as follows:

    - Country Name (C): Use the two-letter code without punctuation for country, for example: US
    - State or Province (S): Spell out the state completely; do not abbreviate the state or province name, for example: California
    - Locality or City (L): The Locality field is the city or town name, for example: Mountain View
    - Organization (O): If your company or department has an &, @, or any other symbol using the shift key in its name, you must spell out the symbol or omit it to enroll, for example: XY & Z Corporation would be XYZ Corportation or XY and Z Corportation.
    - Organizational Unit (OU): This field is the name of the department or organization unit making the request, for example: IT Dept
    - Common Name (CN): The Common Name is the Host + Domain Name, for example: www.bbtest.net
  7. Click continue, a message that the key ring file has been created should be recieved.
  8. Review the information for accuracy, click OK.

Step 2. Create Certificate Signing Request

  1. In the Domino Administration client, double-click on Server Certificate Administration.
  2. At the next screen you will be able to click "Create Certificate Request" from the new key ring. 
  3. Under Key Ring File Name specify the name of the server key ring file including the path to the file. 
  4. Under Log Certificate Request choose one: Yes (default) to log information in the Server Certificate Admin application or No to not log information
  5. Under Method, click Paste into form on CA's site.
  6. Enter the password for the server key ring file. 
  7. Copy the CSR (including the BEGIN and END tags) as seen below:

                -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----

                             [encoded data]

                -----END CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----

  8. Proceed with the Enrolment and paste the CSR in the required field.
